Position Title:Mechanical Engineer 3 Position Type: On-Site Position Location: Knoxville, TN Clearance Required: Secret (or ability to obtain)
Waypoint’s client is seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer 3 to join their team supporting space-related projects in Knoxville, Tennessee. This mid-senior level role is essential to developing advanced mechanical and control systems, specifically for nuclear explosion monitoring networks, including projects for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) International Monitoring System (IMS). The ideal candidate will possess a solid background in system design and integration, coupled with a strong understanding of high-complexity engineering standards.
Responsibilities:
Develop and create fabrication and assembly drawings per ASME Y14 standards, focusing on tolerancing and design for manufacturability.
Interpret and apply electrical schematics in system troubleshooting and design.
Prepare engineering proposals, test reports, customer presentations, and design specifications.
Collaborate with technicians to validate design feasibility, ensuring specifications are achievable and compliant.
Participate in technical working groups to interface directly with customers and gather design requirements.
Estimate labor hours, monitor actuals, and coordinate schedules with project managers to support project timelines.
Troubleshoot complex mechanical systems, using sensor data and log files to identify and resolve issues.
Develop bills of materials for new designs and manage materials throughout the fabrication process.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field.
3 to 5 years of diversified experience in engineering, with expertise in mechanical and control systems.
Proficiency in creating fabrication and assembly drawings per ASME Y14 standards, focusing on design for manufacturability and tolerancing.
Experience interpreting electrical schematics for troubleshooting and design adjustments.
Demonstrated ability to work closely with technicians to ensure design compliance.
Ability to estimate labor requirements, manage schedules, and coordinate with project managers.
Skilled in developing bills of materials and overseeing material tracking during fabrication.
Strong analytical, communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to engage with technical working groups.
Desired:
Hands-on experience with high-purity compressed air systems, cryogenic cooling, high vacuum systems, nuclear detectors, and industrial controls.
Active DoD Secret Clearance is highly preferred.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This role does not include direct supervisory responsibilities but may involve providing technical guidance to junior Engineers, supporting their development, and ensuring high standards across project deliverables.
